The cast-iron statue, located on the South Lawn of the Lucerne County Historic Courthouse on Wilkes-Barre River Street, is the oldest public sculpture in the city, dating back to 1866.
News reports state that around the time the court opened in June 1909, it was moved from the downtown public square to River Street. The Robert Wood Company of Philadelphia, which built an iron fence around the Third County Courthouse in the public square, made the statue as a reward.
Tony Brooks, MP for Wilkes-Barre and director/curator of the Wilkes-Barre Preservation Society, began collecting photographs of people who posed for photos to showcase them, saying the statue is “one of a kind” that helps make the area unique .
