MOBILE, Ala. — The City of Mobile and the Mobile Arts Council are seeking proposals from accomplished artists to create a bronze sculpture honoring music legend and Gulf Coast native Jimmy Buffett.
The lifelike memorial sculpture will be located on the waterfront of the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf Coast. The sculpture will be unveiled in conjunction with a new exhibit at the museum during the fourth annual Son of a Sailor Festival in September 2026, which celebrates Buffett’s enduring musical and cultural legacy.
A pioneer of the Gulf and West music genre, Buffett spent his teenage years in Mobile and graduated from McGill College (now McGill-Toulon College) in 1964. Although Buffett lived and wrote in various communities along the Gulf Coast, he always called Mobile home.
Inspired by the port city’s seaside charm, maritime culture, and laid-back lifestyle, Buffett’s music embodies the spirit of the Gulf Coast, earning him a devoted following around the world. His songs, including “A Pirate Looks at Forty,” “Son of a Sailor,” and “Biloxi,” have immortalized the region’s seafaring traditions, making him an iconic ambassador for the coastal lifestyle that remains an important part of our culture.
As part of the revitalization of the Mobile waterfront, the City of Mobile and the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf Coast will honor Buffett’s legacy with an immersive exhibit and a bronze sculpture of Buffett in downtown Mobile overlooking the waterfront.
This unique exhibition spans two floors of the museum and explores Buffett’s life, music, and impact on the Gulf Coast. Through a partnership with the Buffett family, the exhibition will feature numerous artifacts from the musician’s life, as well as unreleased recordings, videos, and behind-the-scenes footage from his nearly 60-year career.
